Kris Kristofferson and Other Artists Praise God Wonderfully with “Why Me Lord”
Isn’t it heart-warming to see and hear several country musicians gathered on stage to sing glories to God? When Kris Kristofferson turned 80, the country music industry played host to an all-star tribute in Nashville, Tennessee. His influence on the music business is self-evident, and the tribute concert proved his title. Kris Kristofferson and other country singers come together to sing the gospel song “Why Me Lord.” RELATED: The Most Loved Gospel Songs of Kris Kristofferson The song “Why Me Lord” was penned by Kris Kristofferson himself after he attended a sacred ceremony led by the Rev. Jimmie Rogers Snow and was touched by how Larry Gatlin sang “Help Me (Lord)”. This was during the dispiritedly down phase of his life. It was like he was questioning the Lord why He had blessed him. It was a really impactful and inspirational song that affected almost everyone. During the concert, the Bridgestone Arena was brought to church for the finale, “Why Me, Lord?” with the Legend at the center stage as all artists that night were behind him and harmonized like they were in a chorale. This is a once in a lifetime and a must-see performance that you can’t miss. The country’s biggest stars performed together with the renowned country star and sang his glorious song. Performers include Willie Nelson, Rosanne Cash, Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Lee Ann Womack, Larry Gatlin, Jessi Colter, Lady Antebellum, Jennifer Nettles, Alison Krauss, Jamey Johnson, Jack Ingram, Hank Williams Jr, Eric Church, and Emmylou Harris. And we admire that they placed the Lord at the center during that evening. Kris Kristofferson Day in Nashville was declared on March 16, 2016, as stated by the Mayor, in appreciation of the Legendary singer. The Lord reaches and touches everyone. “Why Me Lord”: The Iconic Duet of Johnny Cash and Ray Charles
In 2010, Johnny Cash and Ray Charles surprised their fans when they put out one of their unreleased duet of Kris Kristofferson’s hit song “Why Me Lord” after nearly 30 years since its recording making it pretty iconic. In 1981, Johnny sent a letter to Ray asking him if he could release the song as a single on CBS on an equal royalty share basis. With this letter revealed to the public, many speculated that the song should have been released in 1981. RELATED: Kris Kristofferson and Other Artists Praise God Wonderfully with “Why Me Lord” The song was part of Ray Charles’s 2010 album, which also contained all ten previously unreleased songs, including his version of “Why Me Lord” with Cash. The song is simply about a man grateful to God for the many blessings in life, acknowledging His love, His sacrifices, and His tireless understanding. A number of country singers, including the legendary Connie Smith, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, and George Jones, have also released their own versions of the song. Johnny Cash and Ray Charles’s versions, in particular, caused massive headlines because the song was released 30 years after their initial recording – which reasons remain unclear to this day. Johnny Cash and Ray Charles Version Compared to the original, Johnny Cash and Ray Charles’s version has a jazzy vibe. The blending of their vocals is also worth noting, considering Ray has a Baritone voice that is complemented by Johnny’s deep yet bass-tone voice. Aside from that, since Johnny and Ray’s version was released in 2010, their tune has a modern twist, compared to Kris’s version, which still has that classic country vibe. Because of that, it immediately became a hit among listeners, making it one of Johnny and Ray’s greatest hits. Although it took so long for the song to be released, listeners couldn’t ask for more, as it was all worth the wait. So if you haven’t checked it out yet, you can watch Johnny Cash and Ray Charles’s version of “Why Me Lord” below.
Josh Turner and Randy Travis Blessed Country Fans With “Forever And Ever, Amen” Live Performance
In August 2020, country music heartthrob Josh Turner visited The Bobby Bones Show, and he was joined by a special guest, none other than the Country Music Hall of Famer Randy Travis. In a video shared by the show, the two graced the audience with a performance of Travis’ 1987 country hit “Forever And Ever, Amen.” Sitting on a small stage, Turner was armed with his acoustic guitar, playing one of the most romantic country ballads. Meanwhile, Travis was sitting in his wheelchair at the stage’s side – smiling with several nods of approval all through Turner’s performance. At the end of the song, something so emotional happened. Turner held back for Travis to sing the signature closer. The duo’s version of “Forever And Ever, Amen” was released as a single on Turner’s album, Country State of Mind. This marked Travis’s first recording session following his massive stroke in 2013, which severely limited his speech and singing abilities. Josh Turner Chose The Romantic Ballad For A Couple of Reasons There were two reasons that came to mind when Josh Turner was deciding which among Randy Travis’ songs to sing for his eight studio album. First of all, “Forever And Ever, Amen” is Travis’s signature song. Next, Turner revealed that he has always wanted to recreate what he had seen live on the record – so he did! “Forever And Ever, Amen” was written by Nashville veteran songwriters Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz. Randy Travis then released it as the first single off the album Always & Forever. The song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and achieved the same success in the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart. Make sure to watch Turner and Travis’ incredible performance in the video below.
Merle Haggard’s Spot-On Impersonations of Country Stars That Will Amaze You
Merle Haggard, known for his distinctive voice and masterful songwriting, was a country music icon and a master of impersonations. While many know him for hits like “Okie from Muskogee” and “Mama Tried,” Haggard had a lesser-known talent that surprised many of his peers: his ability to impersonate other country music stars with astonishing accuracy. One of Haggard’s most memorable impersonations was that of his friend and fellow country legend, Buck Owens. According to Rolling Stone, Dwight Yoakam remarked, “He was great at doing impressions. His Buck Owens impersonation is hilarious. It’s eerily, spot-on Buck.” Haggard could replicate Owens’ singing voice perfectly, but it didn’t stop there. He also mimicked Owens’ distinctive stage presence, bouncing shoulders, and half-closed eyes. This uncanny impression left audiences—and Owens himself—in awe. One legendary moment came in January 1972 on The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, where Haggard took his impersonations to the national stage. During his appearance, he performed a medley of country classics, including “Devil Woman” by Marty Robbins and “I’m Movin’ On” by Hank Snow. However, his impressions of Buck Owens and Johnny Cash truly stole the show. Haggard’s performance of Owens’ “Love’s Gonna Live Here” was so accurate that Owens, lurking backstage, couldn’t resist joining in. Owens snuck up behind Haggard, playfully covering his eyes, before harmonizing with him. The moment, filled with laughter and admiration, is a testament to the mutual respect between the two country stars. At Owens’ request, Haggard then turned his attention to Johnny Cash. Performing “Jackson,” a duet Cash originally recorded with his wife, June Carter Cash, Haggard perfectly captured Cash’s deep, resonant voice. As Haggard sang, Cash himself stepped in to join the impersonation, creating a memorable moment where even fans had trouble distinguishing between the voices of Haggard and the real Man in Black. As Rolling Stone described, “With both Haggard and Cash singing the same line, it’s a little tough to figure out which voice is which.” These playful impersonations weren’t just acts of comedy—they were acts of deep respect and admiration. Haggard’s ability to emulate his fellow country artists wasn’t meant to mock them but rather to celebrate their unique styles and contributions to country music. In doing so, he demonstrated not only his vocal talent but also his deep understanding of his peers’ craft and personalities. Though many have tried to imitate these legends, Haggard’s impressions were special. His flawless execution of these impersonations became an iconic part of his performances, leaving a lasting impression on audiences and the artists he honored. Toby Keith Joined Country Legend Merle Haggard In A Memorable Duet of “Mama Tried”
Isn’t it amazing when the classic meets modern? Well, that’s just what happened when two country superstars took the stage for the iconic song “Mama Tried. In 2004, during Willie Nelson’s concert, Willie Nelson & Friends: Outlaws and Angels at Wiltern Theatre, Los Angeles, Nelson invited two of the biggest names in country music – it’s none other than Merle Haggard and Toby Keith. “I’d like to bring to you my very favorite best friend, Merle Haggard. He’s been a big influence on Toby Keith all his life. And like Merle, Toby sure has had a big influence on country music for the last few years,” Nelson said as he welcomed Haggard and Keith on the stage. Haggard kicked off the performance by singing the first verse, and then he was followed by Keith. And when the two crooners mix their vocals, that’s where the magic happens. “And I turned twenty-one in prison doin’ life without parole. No one could steer me right, but Mama tried, Mama tried. Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied. That leaves only me to blame ’cause Mama tried,” Haggard and Keith singing together. While Nelson didn’t sing, he played the guitar for Haggard and Keith’s high-energy duet, bringing a new level to Haggard’s classic hit. The Song Is Heavily Influenced By Merle Haggard’s Early Life Written by Merle Haggard himself, “Mama Tried” was heavily based on the pain and suffering Haggard caused his own mother after being in prison at San Quentin in 1957. However, the song is not autobiographical, as pointed out by several country music historians. For instance, the man in the song “turned twenty-one in prison doin’ life without parole,” but Haggard never had a sentence of “life without parole.” Still, its lyrics and the man’s experiences in the song were heavily influenced by Haggard’s early life. “Mama Tried” was released in 1968 as the first single and title track of Haggard’s album of the same name. The song then went on to become one of the cornerstone songs of his career. “Mama Tried” won the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999 and was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry due to its “cultural, historical, or artistic significance” in 2016, just two weeks before Haggard’s death. Merle Haggard died during his 79th birthday on April 6, 2016. He died of complications from pneumonia at his home in Palo Cedro, Shasta County, California – and the country music community was left feeling lost. Keith was one of the many who was hit especially hard. “He had the look; he had the voice; he had the name; he was a songwriter and a great guitar player. He was just the consummate singer-songwriter,” Keith said. Tune in below and enjoy Haggard and Keith’s incredible performance in the video below.
Johnny Cash And June Carter Cash Duet “Help Me Make It Through the Night”
The legendary country singer Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, joined the long list of artists who covered the classic country ballad “Help Me Make It Through The Night.” Just like anyone would expect, they nailed the song easily. Kris Kristofferson wrote and composed the song for his 1970 self-titled album, with Fred Foster as producer. He first offered the song to Dottie West, but she declined to record it, saying it was too racy for her style. Later in the year, Sammi Smith released her rendition, and it became a commercial success, topping the country singles chart and even making it a crossover hit. It was the first cover version and the most successful one. In fact, “Help Me Make It Through The Night” became so associated with Smith that it evolved as her signature song. Amid the success, Smith’s cover of the song earned controversies due to the song’s topic of sexual intimacy (with fans suggesting it pertained to a one-night stand) – the yearning for it to the point of not caring if who or what was wrong or right. As the song said, “Let the devil take tomorrow / Lord, tonight I need a friend.” Yesterday or tomorrow didn’t matter. Onto The Duet Unlike the original version and Smith’s, which was mellow and slow at the start, the two went for a more guitar-heavy, upbeat style right off the bat. The arrangement sounded more romantic and definitely happier, befitting a couple’s duet. Johnny’s bass-baritone perfectly complemented his wife’s clear, pure voice. Their unmatched chemistry was even more highlighted in their live performance of the song. As one commenter said, the way they looked at each other was just true love through and through. They were such a treat to the eyes and, of course, the ears. Feel the romance and the heat of “Help Me Make It Through the Night” with Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash by watching the video below.
This Little Girl Dancing to Blake Shelton’s Song Is The Cutest Thing You’ll See Today
Consider yourself warned because this is too cute to handle. This little girl minded her own business in the middle of their kitchen, enjoying a bag of grapes – which she refused to let go of when her mother tried taking it away. However, the moment she heard Blake Shelton singing “Red red red red red red red red redneck,” the cute girl was quick to drop her grapes, jump on her feet, and begin dancing. Moving from side to side, the adorable girl is totally having a great time grooving along to the country hit “Boys’ Round Here.” She even occasionally yelled, “Redneck!” And since she could still barely speak at her age, she did her best at lip-synching. She even got some encouragement from her proud father, who can be heard saying, “shake it, shake it,” over and over again. The cutest part came when she whined a bit when she knew the song was almost over! Written by Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson, and Craig Wiseman, “Boys’ Round Here” is a celebration of Southern life. It was released in 2013 off Blake Shelton’s album, Based on a True Story…, and ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. But what’s even more amazing is that it features backing vocals from different artists associated with Shelton. There’s his then-wife Miranda Lambert’s country music group Pistol Annies, The Voice contestant RaeLynn, and the three songwriters. Indeed, it was catchy enough, and we can’t blame this cute little girl if she can’t stop dancing from it. You can watch the adorable footage in the video below.
