Josh Turner Chose The Romantic Ballad For A Couple of Reasons There were two reasons that came to mind when Josh Turner was deciding which among Randy Travis’ songs to sing for his eight studio album. First of all, “Forever And Ever, Amen” is Travis’s signature song. Next, Turner revealed that he has always wanted to recreate what he had seen live on the record – so he did! “Forever And Ever, Amen” was written by Nashville veteran songwriters Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz. Randy Travis then released it as the first single off the album Always & Forever. The song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and achieved the same success in the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart. In 2004, during Willie Nelson’s concert, Willie Nelson & Friends: Outlaws and Angels at Wiltern Theatre, Los Angeles, Nelson invited two of the biggest names in country music – it’s none other than Merle Haggard and Toby Keith. “I’d like to bring to you my very favorite best friend, Merle Haggard. He’s been a big influence on Toby Keith all his life. And like Merle, Toby sure has had a big influence on country music for the last few years,” Nelson said as he welcomed Haggard and Keith on the stage. Haggard kicked off the performance by singing the first verse, and then he was followed by Keith. And when the two crooners mix their vocals, that’s where the magic happens. “And I turned twenty-one in prison doin’ life without parole. No one could steer me right, but Mama tried, Mama tried. Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied. That leaves only me to blame ’cause Mama tried,” Haggard and Keith singing together. While Nelson didn’t sing, he played the guitar for Haggard and Keith’s high-energy duet, bringing a new level to Haggard’s classic hit.   The Song Is Heavily Influenced By Merle Haggard’s Early Life Written by Merle Haggard himself, “Mama Tried” was heavily based on the pain and suffering Haggard caused his own mother after being in prison at San Quentin in 1957. However, the song is not autobiographical, as pointed out by several country music historians. For instance, the man in the song “turned twenty-one in prison doin’ life without parole,” but Haggard never had a sentence of “life without parole.” Still, its lyrics and the man’s experiences in the song were heavily influenced by Haggard’s early life. “Mama Tried” was released in 1968 as the first single and title track of Haggard’s album of the same name. The song then went on to become one of the cornerstone songs of his career. “Mama Tried” won the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999 and was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry due to its “cultural, historical, or artistic significance” in 2016, just two weeks before Haggard’s death. The legendary country singer Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, joined the long list of artists who covered the classic country ballad “Help Me Make It Through The Night.” Just like anyone would expect, they nailed the song easily. Kris Kristofferson wrote and composed the song for his 1970 self-titled album, with Fred Foster as producer. He first offered the song to Dottie West, but she declined to record it, saying it was too racy for her style. Later in the year, Sammi Smith released her rendition, and it became a commercial success, topping the country singles chart and even making it a crossover hit. It was the first cover version and the most successful one. In fact, “Help Me Make It Through The Night” became so associated with Smith that it evolved as her signature song. Amid the success, Smith’s cover of the song earned controversies due to the song’s topic of sexual intimacy (with fans suggesting it pertained to a one-night stand) – the yearning for it to the point of not caring if who or what was wrong or right. As the song said, “Let the devil take tomorrow / Lord, tonight I need a friend.” Yesterday or tomorrow didn’t matter. Onto The Duet Unlike the original version and Smith’s, which was mellow and slow at the start, the two went for a more guitar-heavy, upbeat style right off the bat. The arrangement sounded more romantic and definitely happier, befitting a couple’s duet. Johnny’s bass-baritone perfectly complemented his wife’s clear, pure voice. Their unmatched chemistry was even more highlighted in their live performance of the song. As one commenter said, the way they looked at each other was just true love through and through. They were such a treat to the eyes and, of course, the ears. Consider yourself warned because this is too cute to handle.   This little girl minded her own business in the middle of their kitchen, enjoying a bag of grapes – which she refused to let go of when her mother tried taking it away. However, the moment she heard Blake Shelton singing “Red red red red red red red red redneck,” the cute girl was quick to drop her grapes, jump on her feet, and begin dancing.   Moving from side to side, the adorable girl is totally having a great time grooving along to the country hit “Boys’ Round Here.” She even occasionally yelled, “Redneck!” And since she could still barely speak at her age, she did her best at lip-synching.   She even got some encouragement from her proud father, who can be heard saying, “shake it, shake it,” over and over again. The cutest part came when she whined a bit when she knew the song was almost over!   Written by Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson, and Craig Wiseman, “Boys’ Round Here” is a celebration of Southern life. It was released in 2013 off Blake Shelton’s album, Based on a True Story…, and ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.   But what’s even more amazing is that it features backing vocals from different artists associated with Shelton. There’s his then-wife Miranda Lambert’s country music group Pistol Annies, The Voice contestant RaeLynn, and the three songwriters.   Indeed, it was catchy enough, and we can’t blame this cute little girl if she can’t stop dancing from it. You can watch the adorable footage in the video below.
