Xabi Alonso Reflects on Emotional Return to Anfield Following Heavy Loss

Xabi Alonso’s much-anticipated return to Anfield ended in disappointment as his Bayer Leverkusen side fell to Liverpool in a resounding 4-0 defeat in the Champions League. The former Liverpool icon, who was widely considered as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, watched from the visitors’ technical area as his team struggled to keep pace with Arne Slot’s dynamic Reds, who sit at the top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables.

After the match, Alonso reflected on Liverpool’s growth under Slot’s leadership, saying, “It is early to tell but I can see Liverpool have a very good balance, a very complete team. They work the 11 players and have the power to keep a clean sheet, which is important in the Champions League.” Despite his disappointment, he acknowledged Liverpool’s prowess and strategic adjustments, which overwhelmed his squad in the second half.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who received a warm reception from the Anfield crowd, admitted the defeat was tough to bear, stating, “The result is painful. The performance is more painful. We lacked some power and consistency. Defeat, accept it, congratulate Liverpool, and move on.” Alonso added that he would try to separate the painful experience of the loss from the sentimental joy of returning to a place where he remains beloved, expressing gratitude for the support from Liverpool fans.

Throughout the match, Alonso was seen urging his players to stay calm and composed, tactics that seemed to work initially but ultimately unraveled as Liverpool found their stride in the second half. While Alonso may not have chosen to take the reins at Liverpool this season, his connection to Anfield remains strong, and his respectful farewell wave to the Kop showed the mutual admiration that still exists.

For Liverpool fans, however, the impressive start under Slot has left them with little reason to dwell on the “what ifs” of Alonso’s coaching potential at Anfield.
