Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen” is one of the most romantic love songs out there, cherished by country music fans for its sweet melody and heartfelt lyrics.
Written by Nashville award-winning songwriters Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, the love song was released in 1987 as the lead single off Travis’ second studio album, Always & Forever. It quickly climbed the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts and won a Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Song, along with the title of Song of the Year at both the ACM and CMA Awards.
The inspiration for the song came from Schlitz’s young son, who would end his nightly prayers with, “Mommy, I love you forever and ever, amen.” This touching message motivated Schlitz and Overstreet to write the song one evening on Overstreet’s porch, leading to its completion within just a couple of hours. The next day, they recorded a simple demo with just voice and guitar, which Randy Travis loved upon first hearing.
Within two months of its release, “Forever and Ever, Amen” went platinum, selling over a million units. This timeless romantic ballad remains one of Randy Travis’ most beloved songs. In 2020, Josh Turner revitalized the song with a cover featuring Travis for his album Country State of Mind, and it was also covered by Ronan Keating and Shania Twain for Keating’s studio album, Twenty Twenty.
