Among the items buried with the queen were her white wedding veil, a poignant symbol of her enduring love for her late husband, Prince Albert, who died in 1861. This choice starkly contrasts with her lifelong mourning attire, as she sought to return to him even in death. But the veil is just the beginning of a complex narrative filled with intrigue and emotion.

Photographs of both Prince Albert and her controversial Indian servant, Abdul Karim, also found their way into her coffin. The inclusion of Karim, who was a significant presence in Victoria’s later years, raises eyebrows, especially since his influence was resented by many in the royal household. Following her death, King Edward VII ordered the destruction of much of Karim’s correspondence, yet this final act of inclusion ensures that his memory remains intertwined with hers.

Perhaps the most scandalous item in the coffin was a ring that belonged to John Brown, Victoria’s Scottish servant, who had become a source of comfort for her after Albert’s death. Speculation about their relationship has persisted for years, with some suggesting a secret marriage. The ring’s presence in her coffin amplifies the mystery surrounding their bond, making it clear that Victoria’s affections extended beyond the confines of royal propriety.

Together, these items form an emotional time capsule that reveals the queen’s deep sentimentality and the intimate connections she held dear throughout her life.

Breaking with royal tradition, Victoria also requested a military funeral, adorned with white horses and plumes, a stark departure from the customary black. This choice reflects her position as head of the armed forces and empress of India, while also signaling her desire to reclaim the color white in her final moments, a color she had shunned since Albert’s death.

Victoria was laid to rest beside her beloved Albert in the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore, a site she had commissioned as a testament to their love. As the mausoleum undergoes restoration, the secrets of her coffin remain sealed, waiting to tell the tale of a queen who, despite her immense public stature, was ultimately a woman of profound emotion and personal loyalty.
